Apple iPhone and iPod can get a new piece of technology

There is an interesting question about iPhone and iPod: they have so many users all over the world that they can compose a huge researcher conclave for Apple. They might be having some interesting ideas about new features but luckily iPhone and iPod developers are not waiting to be pushed around, and here is their latest invention. This is a new technology that is due to operate appearing notifications and warnings a little differently from how they are now. The aim is to make above named notifications and warnings easier to apprehend, and to save some battery live.To accomplish the goal, was decided to install another backlight under the display. It will be operated differently from the main one. The secondary display will also be weaker, in order not to burn too much energy. By the patent, it will light up only recent notifications like a new SMS or incoming email on the iPhone and song status for example on the iPod. The main backlight is not being enabled in these cases. More advantages are that every event that is visualized by the secondary backlight can by treated differently depending on the circumstances. The user of an Apple gadget will be able to set a preferred color on play / pause / stop playback, set colors for addresses that text you and so on. Apple doesn't make any official announcement on will we actually see this technology on their products soon and when if it happens. But the thing is though, this technology can obviously be used on any gadget with LCD screen and the designers are also looking forward to make some things easier inside iPhone and iPod. Well, way to go!

Browser battle: Google Chrome vs Opera, Firefox and IE tests

The ongoing internet browser war welcomes its new contestant: famous internet giant Google just released beta version of its upcoming internet browser, which is called Chrome. In the year 2006, person from Google said that they have no plans for releasing their own browser. Recent events show that this was not true. As said in 33-paged presentation, made like a comic book, Google Chrome is very different from any popular browser. It use WebKit engine (same as Safari's), and it was written from scratch to work flawlessly with complex content like JavaScript and modern web applications. Features that make Chrome distinguish itself from monsters like Mozilla Firefox or Opera are simple but truly amazing. First, every tab is an independed process. This makes memory management a lot easier, eliminates the reasons for memory leakage. Each tab is on its own - if one tab crashes there will be no impact on other tabs. This is very useful feature, because if you are working with many tabs at once, you may lose important information if entire browser goes down. Second, it has revolutionary JavaScript engine, which is made to work even faster than in the fastest browsers. Multithreaded page loading is another key to success, because it is very disturbing to wait with a blank screen for some JavaScripts to load: now all elements are loaded simultaneously, not one after another. In the built-in task manager you can see what tab eats more memory or CPU time than others, and effectively manage your tabs to reduce unneeded memory or CPU usage.However, let's make an experiment and see, if this new browser from Google is faster than its famous competitors - Opera, Firefox and IE. We installed all of these browsers, and made them through some simple tests to see, which one will be faster. All browsers are freshly installed, without plugins or other add-ons which can influence on their work. The configuration of our test machine is: AMD Athlon x2 64, 2GB RAM, Windows Vista x86.

Launch time

Launch time is not very important parameter, but it influences the overall pleasure of usage. We were very impressed by Chrome launch time, it easily overdone almost every browser except IE, which launch time was almost completely the same. Let's see whole result table:

IE 1 sec
Firefox 2 sec
Opera 3 sec
Chrome 1 sec

JavaScript speed

There already exist some JavaScript browser speed tests, so we tried this one to see, what speed will have new JavaScript engine from Google. The results were interesting and amazing: while Opera handled this test in about 600 milliseconds, Chrome did it in 350! According to the sheet published on that page, Opera results was fastest that any other browser, and Chrome overdone them easily. However, we believe that there are no ultimate tests, and each and every test may have its own winners. We tried to make our own JS test, to be sure that this test is not optimized for special browser. The task was a simple JavaScript below:

var t = new Date().getTime();

for(i = 0; i<10000000;>
var t1 = new Date();.getTime();

document.write(«Time for executing: „+(t1-t)/1000 + sec.);

We launched it from our local server to eliminate the risk of internet connection influencing the results. So, the testing time begins.

Results for 1 page:

Unfortunately, Internet Explorer was out of the competition, because it didn't want to handle our simple script, asking every time to disable page scenarios. Firefox, Chrome and Opera handled it correctly, but in different time. So, the results are:

Firefox 3.6 sec
Opera 5.7 sec
Chrome 0.3 sec(!)

It is amazing how fast Chrome is compared to leading browsers! But let's try to make this task more complex and open 5 instances of this test page to see, how browsers will handle multithreading.

Results for 5 simultaneously started pages:

Firefox 18 sec (when JS was executed in one tab, all interface buttons were blocked, so we opened pages one after another)
Opera 27 sec
Chrome 0.3 sec(!!!)

Almost unbelievable results, which show that Chrome's JavaScript engine is truly advanced and powerful. It made through this simple test many times faster than its competitors, Firefox and Opera. However, tests will never show a real situation, so we wanted to make a simple usage test and see, how efficient will be Chrome's memory management. We opened 5 tabs simultaneously, five heavy loaded pages in each browser. All browsers was tested on one set of pages, so they are all in one conditions.

Memory usage on 5 tabs right from the start:

IE 60 MB
Firefox 64.4 MB
Opera 52.2 MB
Chrome 75.4 MB

At the first glance, Chrome is eating more memory that its rivals, but let's look on this results after 10 minutes of intensive usage:

Memory usage on 5 tabs after 10 min of intensive surfing:

IE 96 MB
Firefox 109.8 MB
Opera 96.6 MB
Chrome 84.1 MB

Results are not such amazing as speed, but they show that Chrome's multithreaded tab handling, while eating more from the start, wins after some intensive usage.

All these test clearly show us, that new browser from Google is truly revolutionary and very interesting. It is now only on Beta stage, so the result may even improve after time. Of course, it lacks some advanced features that Opera or Firefox have, but let's hope that all of them will be implemented in the final release. Google made a wise choice for keeping its browser open-source, so all the improvements done in the Chrome can be used by other developers in their browsers. It is early to tell, will it have bigger popularity that nowadays leaders, but it is clear that this browser will not pass out unnoticed. Developers say that final version will be released for all operating systems, including Linux and MacOS, and even on the final stage it will remain fully open-source.

A Faster Web Browser - Safari 4 Beta

This month is full of launches and there is one more pleasant release: now Internet resources have become available much faster than earlier with the new Safari 4 Beta from Apple. Its launch was announced on Tuesday, but this web browser has gained controversial opinions. I want to share with you my own experience. It should be mentioned that Safari 4 downloads sites much faster than its predecessor Safari 3. As the manufacturers claim, it is due to the new Nitro Engine. While it shares some features with other web browsers, Safari 4 has some outstanding characteristics that I liked mostly. Firstly, Top Sites, additional option of the browser, allows seeing the most frequently visited sites and, moreover, presents up to 24 of them just on one page. The most interesting feature of the Safari 4 is that you can easily find out which sites have changed since your last visit. If there is a star on the upper corner, it means there have been made modifications. The shortcoming of the Top Sites is that it is designed for mouse and you will not be able to use your keyboard to open a site page. Another feature I liked, is Cover Flow, which enables revisiting and presenting sites as they looked when you viewed them for the last time. A related option, Full History Search allows finding any visited website by just typing a few words from the page looked for. I tried it and received the desirable result. In general, Safari 4 Beta is not much distinguished from other web browsers. Of course, it has features that are not characteristic to Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome, but one of my friends, who uses Safari 4 Beta, has been unsatisfied with its Chrome-like design and he does not like that the tabs are on the top. However, it is not a problem with everyone if you remember that you can create new tabs by clicking the + button in the upper-right corner of the Safari window and manage tabs by dragging them to the new place. I am satisfied with the work of Safari 4 Beta, even despite its several shortcomings. I use it on Windows XP and Safari has a familiar look featuring accustomed title bar, borders, and toolbars.

LG Versa Modem Smartphone – New Experience

If you are aware of and follow the releases on the electronic market, you will not be surprised to find out that LG and Verizon Wireless joined their efforts and technologies to create a completely new product: LG Versa Smartphone with advanced web browsing, which will appear on March 1st, 2009. However, you will be, for sure, satisfied with its design and options, for, besides of the LG well-known quality and durability, the smartphone features some new specifications. The most outstanding and interesting feature of this smartphone is that it comes with a QWERTY keyboard. I do not like to type on a touchscreen (a note: LG Versa has a 3-inch LCD TFT 480 x 240 touchscreen display): for me it is inconvenient. I am sure, there are many people like me, and, at last, this process is made easier. Moreover, this QWERTY keyboard may be used twofold: you can attach it to you smartphone or may leave it at home, if you do not need it. Another characteristic, which may interest the potential buyers, is the built-in accelerometer, which allows automatic rotating of screens. It is highly convenient and, game lovers will understand me, it can be used to manage their favorite games. 2-megapixel camera of the smartphone offers you the following options: auto focusing, image editor, Face Detection technology, and, to be sure, you can record video. However, to my mind, the camera could have higher resolution. The memory capability of the LG Versa will be the following: microSD memory port with up to 16 GB and it is compatible with Verizon’s Mobile Broadband Connect that allows you to connect the phone to your PC - in this case it will serve as a modem. But you have to remember that the Mobile Broadband Connect will cost you per month and it offers just 5GB.Concerning other characteristics, the LG Versa is not highly distinguished from other smartphones. It features Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, GPS-navigator, access to Internet, USB, etc. This smartphone will soon be available and it will cost you approximately 200$.

Turbo NAS TS-809U-RP - 16 TB from QNAP Systems

NAS systems seem to never be ideally perfect, reliable, widely compatible or easy to use. Even though there are pretty big names in the business like LaCie, Addonics, Western Digital, etc. we still were able to find a thing or two to mend in their products. This is really annoying because NAS systems are what seatbelt is to a car driver - not the most exiting thing in a car but truly life-saving. There we are then, with a new NAS gadget from QNAP Systems - model TS-809U-RP Turbo NAS.The presentation of TS-809U-RP Turbo NAS was held today in Taipei, so there is not much to say about different tweaks and upgrades - only very basic numbers which are impressive. Numbers in turn show not only performance of the Turbo NAS, but also grater stability and enhanced feature list. The stats are: 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 2 GB DDR II memory. Storage space as giant as 16 TB of 8 SATA hard drives with hot-swapping and Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology (S. M. A. R. T.). Network redundancy is provided by two Giga LAN ports. The rest of the long list of NAS' features is probably less interesting, so here are best bits of it: automatic policy-based IP blocking, RAID 0/ 1/ 5/ 6/ 5+spare/ 6+spare, Online RAID Capacity Expansion and Level Migration. One of my favorite features is the "Surveillance Station" - Turbo NAS can playback live image from up to four IP-based cams. No problems with OS' ether - Windows, Mac, UNIX, Linux. Well done, QNAP!

Toshiba OLED wallpaper will be here in just a couple of years

How many criteria has a TV to match before you suggest buying it? Ideally there always were two of them - screen size and picture quality. Recently we've started to look sharply at the amount of electricity any display uses and at the stock price of the thing of course. Since there is organic electroluminescence technology or OLED that is brewing its popularity every single day and even moving from home to portable gadgets, we have an ultimate solution for the picture quality and energy consumption issues, but price for an OLED gadget is way up higher over LCD. So, what do you think Toshiba contemplates for their OLED project, better picture or lower price? At this moment it is obvious they were building their OLED wallpaper under "The bigger - the better" motto leaving no info on price so far.Toshiba's OLED TV wallpaper is a completely insane thing. Imagine a screen as big as fits in your house, a bendable one and as thin as paper. Well actually it is paper after all, but it is a sort of paper that is able to display perfectly colored and contrasted OLED quality picture. Mind you TV wallpaper is going to use pretty much a tenth of electricity that LCD or plasma panel would devour. Creating a stable sample of this sort of paper will take Toshiba next few years.As a product, Toshiba's TV wallpaper will be folding since paper is thin and bandable and can be used as a light source just like a light bulb. Looking forward of having one, I don't think it should be too much bigger than to display HD picture in a normal sized room, not accustomed for home theatre. And the very final outlook for TV wallpaper is that it could be a first ever handy solution for panoramic views. There are cameras that can shoot 360 degree angle but there is no displaying hardware to match.

Google Toolbar 6 Beta – Innovation in Web Browser

Google is the most famous search engine which allows us to find the information very fast. Honestly, I like it very much and I have been waiting for the launch of newGoogle software: Toolbar 6, an improved and innovated system for Internet Explorer. Allthough, it is still Beta version so we will be waiting for the Alpha release. I seldom use different web browsers, but I can say that the most interesting feature of the new Toolbar 6 Beta for Internet Explorer is the Quick Search Box or shortly QSB. The only thing you have to do is to click on the Google logo or Ctrl+Space to bring it on the screen. Of course, you have already used this option in other web browsers, as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, but for Internet Explorer it is an innovative feature. When you type the needed word, Google gives you the variants of websites and bookmarks, and you will be able to use them in the search box. It is not always comfortable, for it offers many unnecessary suppositions. If you look for a website or type a word very frequently, it automatically gives you the requested pages. It is one of the options of the Toolbar 6 Beta: to customize to the most frequently visited sites. Another innovation of the Toolbar 6 Beta is a new tab page (this option is already available in Mozilla Firefox and some other web browsers) which shows the most frequently visited sites and recently closed tabs. It is convenient, for sometimes users need to return to the already viewed websites. Moreover, you can add new button gadgets to the tool bar. And, another feature, useful for people from different countries, Google Toolbar 6 Beta is available in 40 languages!Google added several outstanding characteristics to its software system, and those people, who are habituated to use Internet Explorer, will be satisfied with Toolbar 6 Beta.
